About Scarlette
Music at 906 was founded and is owned by Scarlette Kerr.
Scarlette is a native of Virginia, and grew up in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.
Scarlette began her musical journey at the age of 4, starting on her small electronic keyboard before her parents bought an upright Yamaha piano that she would learn and practice on for the next 14 years. She enjoyed accompanying and performing with her school bands and choirs and loved it so much that she decided to study music in college.
Scarlette attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA where she graduated with her Bachelor of Music in Performance with an emphasis in Accompanying. While at JMU, Scarlette was active as a collaborative pianist and teacher and became passionate about piano pedagogy.
In 2018, she relocated to Winston-Salem, NC to do her graduate studies at Salem College and to study injury-preventive piano technique with Dr. Barbara Lister-Sink. During her studies at Salem College, Scarlette became interested in holistic piano teaching, where students not only learned how to just play the piano, but learned how to be independent and creative musicians through experiential learning. She was influenced by the research of Dr. Barbara Lister-Sink in the field of injury-preventive piano technique and its foundations in neuroscience and neuropedagogy. She was also inspired by the work of Dr. Edwin E. Gordon and his research in Music Learning Theory and Audiation.
Scarlette’s vision as a teacher grew into an idea where she could not only teach students the language of music in an active and engaging way, but also instill healthy habits of playing to create musical and independent musicians long after their days in piano lessons were over.
Since graduating from Salem College with her Master of Music in 2020, Scarlette and her husband decided to settle down in the Triad and started Music at 906 to offer innovative and engaging piano lessons from her home in Winston-Salem.
Scarlette is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music from the Music Teachers National Association and holds two certifications in Piano from the Gordon Institute for Music Learning. She is active in the local music community as a member of the Winston-Salem Piano Teachers Association and the Thursday Morning Music Club of Winston-Salem, and is the pianist for the Triad Festival Singers.
She is a technique specialist for Music Learning Academy and has offered webinars for piano teachers and has appeared on podcasts such as Music Studio Startup, and Keys to Music Learning.
When Scarlette is not teaching or practicing, she enjoys reading, traveling to new places, and taking long walks with her cockapoo, Pippin. She’s thrilled to be a part of the well-established arts community in Winston-Salem, and to help students find their passion in music.
